Hand dyed scarves and shawls by Barbara Rogers

“Scarves are works of art in their own right”

This exhibition of scarves and shawls demonstrates the extent to which the traditional craft of Shibori adapts to contemporary design.

Shibori is a traditional Japanese resist-dye technique of textile patterning. The variety of amazing colours, patterns and textures are made by binding, stitching, folding, twisting and compressing cloth before the textiles are dyed. The tradition still lives today.

Barbara Rogers has over 20 years experience in textile design and fashion and has developed her own methods of dyeing from traditional Japanese techniques. Using this accumulated knowledge together with experimental freedom, Rogers pushes the possibilities of Shibori to its creative limit, building layers of colour and pattern to produce highly complex fabrics. Each piece is unique and instantly recognisable as the Rogers label.
