Dianne Finnegan’s quilts are autobiographical. She attended Wilderness School and lived in Canada for a couple of years and these facts influenced her choice of a title for her current exhibition, Wanderer in the Wilderness, which is the Canadian name for a quilt design more commonly known as Drunkard’s Path.
She has recently been using the textiles she has gathered from around the world over many years to create quilts that would work equally on the wall as on the bed. A wander through the exhibition would take the viewer past Japanese shibori dyed and stencilled indigos, Indonesian batiks, Nigerian batiks and hand dyed fabrics that evoke the deserts of Central Australia. The visual texture of the textiles is exploited when it is cut and recombined with other fabrics to create a fresh vision. Traditional patterns are reinterpreted and original designs developed.
Most of our important life events occur in the bed, surely it deserves a worthy cover? Moving from the horizontal to the vertical, a quilt on the wall provides a striking graphic as well as acoustic benefits.
