Sugar & Spice and all Things Nice
November 2, 2011 - November 14, 2011
‘Sugar & Spice and all Things Nice’- is what little girls are made of. Isn’t it?
Pia Larsen presents three works that address notions of ‘liberation’, ageing and self-determination for women today.
‘Girls on Sticks with Spots’ addresses a number of discourses surrounding the sexualised body including Raunch culture which some claim liberates women as sexual beings as they slide up and down poles scantily dressed.
‘Top Hits’ is a freeze-framed game which involves tennis racquets, latex breast casts some filled with tennis balls some empty, as a metaphor for the time and energy women invest in maintaining an ‘ideal’ body.
In the image ‘After Louise’ I carry a polished giant zinc breast shield wearing only floppy ‘playboy bunny’ ears around my neck as a nod to Robert Mapplethorpe’s image of Louise Bourgeois and the playboy bunnies of the 1970’s which I grew up with as symbols of objectified women.
