DESCRIPTION:  \nLisa Tomasetti\nHappy After Ever \nThis series continues Tomasetti’s interpretative response to the work of the Dutch Masters.  In Happy Ever After (2019) she enlists elements of landscape to further an investigation of notions of impermanence caused by the impact of the digital\, photography’s new realm. \nEmploying surrealism\, the purpose is to disrupt ways of seeing and lend a hyperreality to the image. \nTomasetti collaborates with her daughter engaging in their lives both parallel and unique. The ideas are drawn from life and therefore speak truths that only photography and the image can articulate. As such they are essentially impressions of the real world\, journeys that are repeated generation after generation. \nPhotography is capable of permanence both technically and emotionally as a form of record. It includes natural dye throws\, scarves\, cushions\, tablecloths\, and hand-woven clothes.

DESCRIPTION:Shells\n\n			\n		\n\n  \nKathleen Berney\, Liz Gemmell\, Beth Hatton\, Irene Manion and Barbara Rogers celebrate the beauty and diversity of shells. Using textile processes they re-imagine shell structures and markings\, revealing the inner dynamic of patterns of growth – multiplication\, repetition and variety\, division and all-embracing unity. \nTrained at the National Art School Sydney\, Barbara Rogers is a textile designer specialising in shibori. Irene Manion\, who studied Fine Arts at Sydney University and taught art in high schools\, works with digital design and stitching. Educated at COFA\, Beth Hatton has long focussed on environmental issues\, most recently through the stitching of plant materials into sculptural forms. Liz Gemmell\, part-time lecturer at the University of Technology\, experiments with various textile techniques to develop artwear of geometric simplicity. SUMMARY:Diary of a Landscape
DESCRIPTION:  \nTextiles by PAMELA FITZSIMONS \nBow Wow is a 100 hectare conservation property in the lower Hunter Valley\, 130k north of Sydney\,  in NSW Australia. I have lived here since 1999. The Bow Wow Creek Gorge forms the greater part of the property which is rich in geological\, botanical and historic references as well as aboriginal heritage\, is listed on the Register of The National Estate and by The National Trust and preserved under a Voluntary Conservation Agreement with National Parks and Wildlife NSW. This place is my inspiration. \nMy work explores the effects of engaging with a particular landscape or place\, and concepts of time. The fossils of Bow Wow Gorge were laid down in the Permian period about 230 million years ago\, when Australia was part of the great continent Gondwana. This place formed part of the coast at the time and embedded in the resulting sandstone which covers a rich coal measure\, are marine fossils.  At Bow Wow a small stream has over 50 million years cut a narrow winding gorge through the rock\, revealing the fossils in layers in the soaring sandstone cliffs. Does a landscape choose us\, or do we choose a landscape which fits our idea of what it should be? \nThe wild\, the tamed\, the green and lush\, the dry and stony; forest\, woodland\, heath\, seaside\, we all have our favourites. I came to the Bow Wow landscape slowly\, it drew me in\, the rainforest at the gorge base\, the dry woodland on the ridges\, the many caves\, some sunny and north facing\, others brooding and dark with bats roosting in the ceiling. \nI enjoy walking and spend a lot of time observing the diverse flora and fauna.  As part of our partnership with National Parks and Wildlife we spend many hours working on weed control. The main weed is Lantana\, a plant introduced from Africa for its pink and yellow flowers. It grows on the sunny slopes and cliffs which we have to scale. This creates a special and intimate connection with the land. Living in the landscape\, being part of a landscape. \nThe work created during the time here has reflected my engagement with this special place. Slow and process driven it is a meditation on Bow Wow. I use plant material collected on site to dye fabrics which are collaged together and hand stitched. Pieces are worked on over a long period of time and imbedded in them are the frustrations I feel at the constant battle we wage against the destruction of the remaining bushland in our local area. DESCRIPTION:  \nThis series by Catherine Cloran was made in Spring 2016 during a three-month sojourn in rural Italy. I had planned to walk through the countryside taking photos\, however\, a broken foot meant that I was confined to the passenger seat of a car instead.  \nIn an effort to make the most of an unfortunate situation\, I started shooting through the side window. The foreground rushed by faster than the background and seemed to shred into transparent sheets that covered the background like a strange kind of storm.  \nI became interested in how the landscape was perceived while moving fast through it.  The more I looked\, the more the landscape seemed to rip apart and disintegrate. Light\, colour and form were tossed about\, especially on rough roads. DESCRIPTION:Weaving Labour – Emelie Röndahl.\n\n			\n	\n\n  \nEmelie Röndahl is an artist weaver and PhD candidate in Craft at the Academy of Design and Crafts (HDK) in Gothenburg\, Sweden. “Rya Weaving: Where does the picture start?” is the current title of her PhD project\, which she began in 2016 as practice-based research in hand-weaving that investigates low resolution pictures in fluffy overgrown pixels woven in a traditional manner with wool-piles on a linen warp. The project’s written text and rya weaving occupy a personal perspective\, structured around interests in the subjects of labour\, history and time consuming activity. \nOPENING HOURS\nWednesday to Saturday 12 – 5pm \n\nSaturday 7 October\, 3pm. Professor Jessica Hemmings in conversation with artist Emelie Röndahl. \nJessica Hemmings\, Professor of Crafts at the University of Gothenburg\, Sweden will deliver a talk at the Barometer Gallery about the work of Emelie Röndahl and contemporary craft practices in Scandinavia. Barometer Gallery is exhibiting Weaving Labour\, the work of current University of Gothenburg PhD candidate Emelie Röndhal. Röndahl’s practice-based research in hand-weaving investigates low resolution pictures in fluffy overgrown pixels woven in a traditional manner with wool-piles on a linen warp. \nHemmings writes about textiles. In 2010 she edited a collection of essays titled In the Loop: Knitting Now published by Black Dog and in 2012 edited The Textile Reader (Berg) and wrote Warp & Weft (Bloomsbury). DESCRIPTION:Photographs by Catherine Rogers of Paronella Park ruins\, near Innisfail\, in Queensland. \nFrom 1929\, Jose Paronella built\, by hand\, over several hectares\, fantasy pleasure grounds intended for the enjoyment of others. His dream\, which first opened in 1935\, is now largely a ruin\, yet it is an immensely popular tourist destination. SUMMARY:BYOBU
DESCRIPTION:BYOBU: Armando Chant \nBYOBU is a multi panel image\, and structural installation exploring the intersection between image\, surface\, and structure in relation to the aesthetics and function epitomised by Japanese folding screens\, or BYOBU. The spatial installations\, constitute a hybrid form of landscape and architectural representation. The works engage the viewer in a visually and emotionally generative dialogue\, questioning what is present or appearing before them\, while enabling an contemplative experience of space\, structure and gestural image. \nThe imagery depicted on the textile screens/panels have been created by exploring both hand and digital techniques. Digital photographs of a body draped in patterned cloth\, has been re-interpreted through a process of gestural drawing\, using thread\, on dissected\, vertical panels. The thread intersects the textile base to create a drawn and multi dimensional surface similar to an ethereal landscape. The line and marks left behind on the transparent textile surface indicate not only a visual residue or trace of form and image\, but also action and gesture of the artist’s hand. The oscillation between materiality\, surface and image that this creates\, induces a multi faceted experience of an unfolding scene\, spanning image\, space and body. BYOBU opens up an opportunity for experiencing the indeterminate and indefinable image/form that is in a state of constant flux between imaginative emergence and disappearance. \nOPENING: Thursday 8th June\,  6pm – 8pm \nOPENING HOURS: Wednesday to Saturday – 12pm – 5pm

DESCRIPTION:These sand paintings are a small miracle. They act to remind us of the astonishing grace of nature\, a grace that gives a deep and direct communion with the soul. \nWhen I was in Byron Bay\, I saw these wondrous creations on the beach.\nBut I had to act quickly. The morning joggers\, oblivious to their beauty\, were trampling all over them. \nWhat a clear metaphor for the cavalier destruction we wreak on the environment. \nIn our battle to survive our day\, we can neglect to perceive and engage with the charm that surrounds us. That was the tragedy I felt in that small moment. \nIn nature\, I descend into a place where all activity ceases for a time.\nI exist in the beauty of the landscape\, in the light and dark\, silence and sound\, heat and cold. \nI have captured in my work a stillness and harmony that will elicit in the viewer a desire to enter into the landscape and to reside quietly in nature. \nI hope my photographs transport you for a moment into that other world. \nAs Rumi writes “ The soul wants to walk in that cleansing air and not come back” \n  \nOPENING: Tuesday 16th May\,  6pm – 8pm \nOPENING HOURS: Tuesday to Sunday – 12pm – 7pm

SUMMARY:The Nature Table
DESCRIPTION:‘The Nature Table’ by Katrina Simon is an exhibition that brings together works on paper\, photography\, found objects and transformed objects that all engage with the forms and dynamics of depicting the natural world. These include elements that reference landscape and topography\, the growth and transformation of living organisms and the processes of collecting and classification. \nDr Katrina Simon is a designer and visual artist with a background in architecture\, landscape architecture and fine art. She has exhibited work relating to landscape and mapping in numerous solo and group show\, including Objectspace in Auckland\, NZ\, and the Prague Quadrennial for Performance Design and Space in Prague\, Czech Republic in 2015. Katrina has also held residencies at the Cité des Arts International in Paris and the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art\, Nature and Dance in New York.  Her design and research interests focus on the expression of memory and its loss in landscapes\, explored through a range of practices that include exhibitions\, design research\,  design competitions\, archival research\, experimental writing\, and performance-based research. DESCRIPTION:Mnemonic Textiles Emma Peters \nMnemonic textiles are those we associate with our recollections of significant personal experiences. Such textiles become tangible representations of self\, which we are compelled to keep\, cherish and pass down to future generations. They have emotional durability – a theory proposed by Jonathan Chapman and employed to frame this body of work. Our potent connection with mnemonic textiles offers an approach to sustainable design in the face of disposable products so pervasive in contemporary western society. \nEmma Peters references the tradition of patch-worked heirloom quilts and wagga’s to present a collection of experimental textiles that examines memory as a driving conceptual force. The Mnemonic Textiles exhibition presents work that captures memory and sustains life-long attachment. \nThe Topography of Memory series combines natural dye\, digital print\, stitching and felting techniques to suggest disconcertingly distorted childhood memories that remain fundamental influences upon identity. These pieces are shown alongside The Memento Project\, realized as a series of small hand-stitched textile fragments.
