She has also shown her work in a number of group exhibitions including Mark Making at Tin Sheds Gallery and in the 20th Annual Packsaddle Exhibition at the New England Regional Art Museum\, for which her work was shortlisted. \nSeaneen applies her artistic talents as a textile\, print and surface designer. \nThe artist studied at East Sydney Tech\, Sydney Gallery School\, UNSW\, and the National Art School. She was also a teacher herself for over seven years. \nSeaneen’s paintings are built up with many layers. SUMMARY:Karrikins: A solo photographic exhibition by Rob Walwyn
DESCRIPTION:Barometer Gallery  / www.barometer.net.au   /  www.robwalwyn.com\nWednesday 24 November – Sunday 28 November 2021 \nA solo photographic exhibition in November 2021 documenting the aftermath of the recent 2019-20 Australian bushfires using the discontinued and extremely rare Kodak Aerochrome false-colour infrared film. \nThe name Karrikins refers to a set of chemicals that are produced as a result of wildfires and can stimulate the regrowth of certain plants. For this series I have used both medium format and 35mm Kodak Aerochrome film\, a false-colour infrared film developed by Kodak in tandem with the US Military during World War 2\, which was originally designed to detect enemy camouflage. DESCRIPTION:Fibre Arts Australia is highlighting the contemporary practice within Art Textiles as an art form in this\, the inaugural Art Textile Biennale. It has long been a dream of the founder of Fibre Arts Australia\, Glenys Mann\, to highlight art textiles and with the assistance of her business partner\, Nonie Sutcliffe and the generosity of the director Crystal Stubbs and her team at the East Gippsland Art Gallery in Bairnsdale\, the dream has materialised. \nArt Textiles is a term derived to express emotions and feelings using a media that has been used since the dawn of time. With many working with cloth and fibre\, the subtle marks of stitch show an extraordinary diversity of methods that are applied by 29 artists from 16 countries including Australia. Traditional and non-traditional techniques being utilised in a contemporary practice\, the repeated touch in these works is very gratifying. \nViewers will be captivated and engaged by the rhythm of the maker and excellence that is exhibited. The selected works in this inaugural award pushes previously held notions of textile/fibre\, opening a dialogue about what it is to be a textile artist that makes an expression and commentary on content and concept in the 21st Century. \nThe finalists show a well resolved concept combined with exploratory and expert use of their chosen material. From intimate reflections to huge environmental issues\, the works vary in concepts\, techniques\, material and presentation. \nFrom the work of one’s hands\, these works are from artists who present themselves in varied ways as Masters in a technique that is so inherent within their art practice. \nThere is a common thread of innovation\, experimentation beside professional practice with a focus on contemporary as never before. SUMMARY:Stories Told ... by inspired makers
DESCRIPTION:  \nSTORIES TOLD … by inspired makers\nNarratives of the handmade object\, by inspired makers. \nEvery handmade object has a narrative\, the history or ‘story’ of its making. Whether it is the source of the raw materials – the particular clay site\, pigment\, dye\, metal\, timber or threads\, the nature and origin of the necessary tools\, or the inspiration behind individual patterns and motifs\, the story of each handmade object is unique. \nIn the hands of skilled artisans and craft makers there lies not only the history of the individual maker but the traditions\, knowledge and techniques passed on by all the makers before\, often woven through generations\, and all intertwined with the folkloric history of craft itself. \nSTORIES TOLD is a Craftnsw exhibition of original handmade craft by members of The Society of Arts and Crafts of New South Wales.  Founded in 1906\, the organization is the oldest craft association in Australia. Its members are affiliated with craft Guilds and are both teachers and practitioners. DESCRIPTION:  \nTHE SPACE BETWEEN\nAn exploration of parameters of illusional space \nA collaboration between textile designer BARBARA ROGERS and painter HELEN REDMOND\, The Space Between looks at the complicity\, dissonance and illusion that exists in the slippage between surfaces: between the viewer and the frame\, between light and shadow\, between real and imagined. \nThe title of the exhibition throws weight behind the capacity of the unseen to shift our perceptions of space\, light and time. The space that draws our eye to the actual or imaginary space beyond the periphery. Here is space that asserts abstraction over materiality and poetics over utility. \nTaking a subliminal architectural framework as their starting point\, the two artists explore spatial parameters by parallel but distinctly independent means. \nThe Space Between is an ephemeral\, liminal journey through spaces both real and illusional. Embracing the Zen concept of silent space\, the viewer is invited to reflect on the primacy of the interval\, the pause and the place of ambiguous time. \nTHE ARTISTS:\nTextile designer BARBARA ROGERS has gained international acclaim for her innovative work using shibori\, an ancient Japanese resist dye technique. The lure of creating textiles as an independent art form was a natural progression for Rogers who originally trained in fashion design at the National Art School. Working primarily on silks her process is essentially a reductive one\, using clamped-resist carved boards with traditional arashi (pole wrapped) techniques to discharge dyes from the fabrics. The cloth is then overdyed in other colours to produce highly complex designs. The juxtaposition of colour and transparency alternately hide or reveal the layers behind\, adding tension and weight to both the ‘negative’ space between dyed and undyed areas in each panel\, including the vacant airspace created between the separate layers. The multiple layers of Rogers’ large-scale installations meld to dissolve the spaces between\, creating a new and ethereal visual interaction. \nHELEN REDMOND’s paintings explore the response of space to light; the way light reacts to people\, objects and spaces in the built environment. A graduate of the National Art School\, Helen’s painting practice draws deeply on her experience as a design editor and interiors stylist. In these temporal memories of abstract space\, vision is guided by light from the concrete to the nuanced or imagined space that exists beyond the confines of the canvas\, questioning our perceptions of space and time. The layered applications of oil paint and translucent glazes give immersive depth\, adding patina and veils of colour that accrete and compress time and memory into the surface. The quietly evocative images mediate between abstract space and silent space: the compelling void. \nBoth artists view their parallel references to architectural structure as subliminal rather than literal. Barbara’s father was a Sydney architect\, and his indirect influence informs the urban geometry of her work. For Helen\, ‘chasing the light’ with professional photographers to capture the space of architectural interiors forged her aesthetic. SUMMARY:Parallels
DESCRIPTION:  \nBarbara Rogers explores the diversity and language of this graphic pattern\, the stripe. \nParallels will be an installation of contemporary textiles that explores the diversity and language of the stripe\, the simplest of all patterns\, yet a highly versatile tool for communication. Timeless\, gender-neutral and appealing to all ages\, stripes create maximum impact. As Pastoureau reminds us\, the stripe is not “a natural mark but a cultural mark\, one that man stamps on his environment\, inscribes on objects and imposes on other men”[1] \nRogers’ cloths momentarily divert one’s attention away from the tangibility and tactility of the textiles to contemplate features such as colour\, light and shadow\, and open and closed structures.  The binary language of stripes is perfectly matched to the shibori technique – juxtaposing positive with negative\, bound with unbound\, dyed with plain\, and historical with contemporary. Although stripes are often described as being of one plane\, Roger’s masterful manipulation of cloth and dye explore the architectural possibilities of folding; of intersection and overlap; the analogies between pattern and language. In Parallels\, Rogers uses her accumulated knowledge of numerous shibori techniques\, together with experimental freedom\, to push the possibilities towards its creative limits\, urging the viewer to see\, through cloth\, with new eyes; building layers of colour and emphasising the strength behind the apparent fragility of a sheer silk. \n[1] 1. SUMMARY:SHIBORI ON PAPER
DESCRIPTION:  \nCATHERINE ROGERS & BARBARA ROGERS \nShibori is an old Japanese term that describes the shape resist dye techniques of squeezing\, binding and twisting used to create a multiplicity of patterns on textiles. Shibori is also used today to include an even wider variety of techniques such as textiles that have been coloured and de-coloured\, patterned and shaped by stitching\, pleating\, folding\, compression and tying. Patterns created by the many techniques available can be random and the product of chance as well as highly regulated and controlled. \nShibori patterns on silk textiles created by Barbara Rogers have been photographed by Catherine Rogers and reworked in Photoshop to create further Shibori-like patterns which have been printed on paper. The posters refer to several exhibitions of Shibori textiles undertaken by Barbara Rogers from 2012. DESCRIPTION:My inspiration is from classic Madras stripes and checks always looking beautiful as saris and lunghis. I have designed a range of reversible handwoven quilts\, throws\, scarves\, towels and cushions in reds\, navy and indigos. \nAll in soft fine handwoven cottons perfect to wear in the endless heat of today. It celebrates the art of the Kimono and Japanese textiles that are adaptible to many forms of design. \nWhat is there not to love about Japanese textile design? Add that to a classic kimono and you have an artform that has deep traditional significance in Japanese culture going far beyond the superficiality of fashion. \nThe surprising boldness and eclecticism of Japanese fabric design will not be a surprise to those who have been following ‘all things Japanese’.
