DESCRIPTION:  \nJo Allsop\, Hobart Hughes and Penny Simons. \nOctober 25th –  November 1st\nOpen daily 10 – 4pm\nOpening Saturday 26th October 4 – 6pm \n‘Meta Morpheus’ alludes to and plays with the term metamorphosis\, the intention being a chimeric transformation of its original meaning. Meta here is used to describe a subject that transcends its original limits. Morpheus who as the Greek god of dreams and sleep\, bears messages from the underworld to be interpreted subliminally by the cognisant self. \nIn this intriguing show\, the artists offer a sense of the subconscious and the sublime. SUMMARY:Myth & Signification
DESCRIPTION:  \nKudos Offsite presents Myth & Signification\, an exhibition that invites four artists to reflect upon modern mythmaking and the ability of myth to distort and shape meaning. Through sculpture\, installation\, painting and textiles\, myth and counter-myth are explored as devices for investigating the potentiality of oppositional perspectives and utopian ideas in resisting the creation of a world without contradiction. \nDonna Haraway wrote\, “it matters what stories make worlds\, what worlds make stories.” In order to make these worlds\, to suspend reality\, Roland Barthes wrote about Myth and its ability to abolish the complexity of human acts with the intention of creating a world without contradiction. Myth accomplishes this as a kind of metalanguage\, using signs as signifiers to distort meaning and generate new narratives. In The Robbery of Language Roland Boer claims that the crafting of “a world without contradiction” is an undeniable acknowledgement of erasing other perspectives in favour of a singular vision. \nMyth and Signification invites four artists to reflect upon myth and counter-myth as building blocks for such worlds and to consider the relationship between oppositional perspectives and the discourses that dominate them through the utilisation of myth’s power to distort meaning. SUMMARY:Blow Your Own Trumpet
DESCRIPTION:  \nBlow Your Own Trumpet – an exhibition of mobiles and kinetic sculpture by Tina Matthews \nWellington-born Tina Matthews has been an artist and maker for over four decades. Honing her skills as a puppet maker\, book author and illustrator and embroiderer\, her aesthetic is both heartfelt and original. Beating beneath the soul of her work is the imagination of an inventor. For thirty years her commercially successful black and white mobile for newborns has delighted babies the world over and fostered their cognitive development. Matthews worked for many years for Australia’s national puppet company the Marionette Theatre of Australia\, was also employed on Jim Henson’s movie Labyrinth and ABC TV puppet show ‘The Ferals’ all the while teaching puppetry at NIDA for 30 years. She has written and illustrated four picture books and one of these\, ‘Waiting for Later’\, was featured in the State Library of NSW’s 2023 exhibition ‘Imagine- the wonder of picture books’. \nIn this show Tina Matthews presents kinetic sculptures constructed from found and reworked materials that include steel and copper\, wood\, silk threads\, glassine and shellac. These joyful sculptures perform in any breeze that passes and have a parallel life in the shadows they throw on all surrounding surfaces. \n“I have been a puppet maker and puppeteer for many years\, so movement is integral to my three-dimensional work. Having these mobiles and their shadow-selves around me is to be amongst living things; they are unpredictable and constantly amusing in their perpetual performance\, dancing with the air and trying to get my attention. Some shapes and colours appeared to me in dreams\, others arose from memories of childhood fabrics. DESCRIPTION:  \nWOVEN by Liz Williamson \nAs our world is overwhelmed with issues arising from fast fashion / textiles industries\, an individual response is to use what we have – repurposing\, recycling\, circulating existing materials. The idea of making do – using readily available materials for clothing and objects for warmth\, protection or to beautify a home has been central to women’s domestic craft practices for centuries and has been central to Williamson’s practice for the past decade. This exhibition shows ‘new’ work created from waste\, excess materials\, archived designs\, old clothes\, or other materials. \nThese pieces woven by Liz Williamson have been shown in previous solo or international exhibitions and this exhibition allows for a ‘second look’ at Barometer Gallery during September 2023. DESCRIPTION:Men in the Mountains\nFound photographs selected and printed by Catherine Rogers\nMay 31 – July 2\, 2023\nOpen by appointment \nThe negative photographs used in this exhibition were taken by an unknown group of about four men on a short visit to the Blue Mountains around 1930. It appears that they shared a camera to photograph each other posed at various tourist sites they visited on a clear sunny day in the mountains. \nThe prints made from these negatives are imitation cyanotypes (blue-prints) The negatives were found in a market in the 1980s. There were no corresponding prints. \nTo make the prints you see here\, each black and white negative was digitally scanned and then worked in Photoshop to look like a cyanotype print. Blue seemed to fit these images. Cyanotype prints themselves\, however\, have never been very popular. The process was used to print postcards in the early twentieth century but was rarely used to image people. SUMMARY:Dancing Through Disaster
DESCRIPTION:  \nDancing Through Disaster\nJane Theau \nOctober 5-16\,\nOpen Wednesday -Sunday 11-5pm\nRepair Café October 15 \nFire\, flood and Covid have characterised the last few years – it’s been a tough time. Our house on the South Coast was surrounded by fire in January 2020\, devastating the bush for miles around and traumatising communities. My daughter’s house was inundated in this year’s floods that affected so many in northern NSW and southern Queensland. And the lockdowns caused by the pandemic meant that my PhD exhibition in 2021\, representing four years of work\, couldn’t be seen by friends and family (not even by the examiners!) The pandemic had a huge and detrimental effect on artists everywhere as exhibitions were cancelled and creative momentum came to an abrupt stop. I responded to this time with the sculptures and embroidered paintings in this exhibition. They are all made of repurposed materials\, a reflection of my effort to have a sustainable practice. \nThe first sculpture series Urchin Barren is made from the sea urchin spines of Heliocidaris erythrogramma collected on the South Coast. As oceans warm sea urchins are migrating to the poles\, feasting on algae along the way to create ‘urchin barrens’. They have become indicators of climate change. The second series\, Retired\, celebrates the necessary retirement of coal-fired power generation to address the heating world. Made of elements from an old electric stove\, their Modernist aesthetic reflects well the era of rapid construction of coal-fired power stations post WWII. The embroidered paintings are a new element in my practice. As with my thread portraits\, they are made of ink-infused tarlatan collected from the garbage bins of the print room at the UNSW School of Art and Design. \nDespite the hard times there is always much to be grateful for\, and this is expressed in the joyous series of thread portraits of dancers in motion completed for the production\, On View: Panoramic Suite\, by choreographer/filmmaker Sue Healey. (The first performances of On View were held in February 2020 in Yokohama. Moored outside the theatre was the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship\, symbol of the early pandemic panic). The exuberant nature of dance created a beautiful ambiance in my studio and through this collaboration with Sue I was able to experience the joy of working with performers in theatrical settings. The experience added another\, deeper layer to my practice that I hope is conveyed in the expressions on the dancers’ faces and the movement of their limbs. \nJane Theau \nDancing Through Disaster is a Sydney Craft Week event.\nIn keeping with the Craft Week themes of sustainability and climate change I will be\nhosting a free textile Repair Café in the gallery on Saturday October 15.\nBookings: Jane Theau – 0415 110 123.

DESCRIPTION:  \nDRAWING THE LINE: handwoven tapestries by Sara Lindsay\nSeptember 17 – October 2\nOpen: Wednesday – Sunday 11-5pm.\nOpening: 2-4pm\, Saturday\, September 17. \nSara Lindsay’s career spans a period of over 45 years. She has held several positions at the Australian Tapestry Workshop and completed her MA (Research)\, Positioning the stripe\, at RMIT University in 2003. Her tapestries have been acquired by numerous public collections\, including the National Gallery of Australia\, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Powerhouse Museum. \nThis exhibition brings together a selection of artworks completed since 2009\, which celebrate Lindsay’s ongoing interest in the relationship between weaving\, drawing and material culture. \nCargo and Cargo: china tea cinnamon ticking are drawn from a body of work where she was exploring her mother’s life as a colonial child in Sri Lanka. A large blue and white plate that has travelled from China to Sri Lanka\, then to England and later to Australia has been translated into tapestry\, repairing its many cracks and acknowledging Lindsay’s maternal line. Cinnamon quills appear as objects of trade and stimulate strong sensory memories of recent family visits to the ‘Spice Island’. \nThe small Tatami Drawings were commenced during a residency in Kyoto\, added to in Lisbon and completed in Melbourne. The tapestries grew intuitively on the loom with no preconceived design.
