DESCRIPTION:Limited edition digital inkjet prints of landforms and landscapes as they reflect diurnal and seasonal change by Philip Bell. \nMy images are mainly from the Warrumbungles\, Central Australia\, and the Blue Mountains. Some are taken after fires.\nI have etched the contours of the landscape\, others find contrast in the dusk or morning shadows. \nI use quite long exposures and low light settings. I don’t mind a bit of blur\, or having to ‘push’ the image to lose the digital sheen that I associate with advertising. \nOpen  1:00 – 6:00 pm every day.

DESCRIPTION:Natural Wonders\, natural dyes on paper and textiles by Julie Ryder. \nNatural Wonders is a mixed media exhibition consisting of works on paper and naturally dyed and stitched textiles derived and inspired by organic materials drawn and collected from sites that hold personal significance for the artist. Her daily journey from home to studio\, and the many bush and urban walks she takes have inspired her to look at the native and introduced flora of Canberra\, delving into its history to determine the impact that white settlement and the urbanisation of this designed city had on the traditional lands of the Ngunnawal. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition by Rowan Conroy features photographic cloud works that were made during the New South Wales firestorms of 17 October 2013. Prime Minister Tony Abbot at the time commented that firestorms are a natural part of the Australian landscape. This was just nature going about its business\, nature naturing.  The reality of human induced climate change challenges these enlightenment notions of the sublime in nature. Now when we gaze at up at the clouds we can no longer be sure that what we are seeing is nature in its purest form free from the influence of human action. DESCRIPTION:Black and white photographs by Olive R Odewahn \nOlive Rose Odewahn (1914–2006) was a keen amateur photographer. From her teenage years Olive always carried a camera and with it she carefully photographed life around her\, from the farm she grew up on\, to her home on a property in Walla Walla (near Albury) after she married in 1938. For over sixty years\, Olive photographed (first in black and white and later in colour) landscapes\, scenes and portraits; she pictured her family and friends\, the farm and its work\, and special events and places.

SUMMARY:TARKINE
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Rogers shows new photographs from the Tarkine region of north-west Tasmania. Photographs of another landscape marked for destruction. \nThe Tarkine is Australia’s largest remaining tract of cool temperate rainforest – it is also one of the very few unprotected wild places left. The Tarkine landscape comprises wild coastal areas and button grass plains\, pristine rivers and ancient rainforests. The magnificent myrtle forests of the Tarkine are under attack – not from logging this time – but from open cut mining. Exploration has already started in the forests and hundreds of test shafts driven deep into the hillsides. Ten open cut strip mines are proposed\, and 56 more exploration licenses have been granted. The Tarkine will be effectively destroyed should even a fraction of these hugely destructive mining proposals go ahead.

DESCRIPTION:Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm\nPh: 0412 154 709 \nThe olive groves of southern Italy are some of the oldest on earth. Some are so ancient – planted in the Dark Ages and nurtured by around 40 generations – they are actually listed by UNESCO as cultural treasures. \nThese groves\, photographed in Puglia in the heel of the boot of Italy\, are presented as triptychs\, symbolic of the potential harmony on offer when humankind works together with nature. The artist\, Jane Burton Taylor\, is nearing completion of her Masters of Art at the College of Fine Arts (majoring in Sculpture). She took three years to photograph the groves\, visiting them in each of the four season to witness their different stages: including their annual pruning and harvesting\, the latter when nets are thrown on the ground and the trees are shaken to catch their ripe olives. \nThe thirteen works\, presented in a linear collection that can be read as a whole\, represent  a man-made landscape; nature and human beings having both produced the spaces together. In a sense they are architectural spaces. \nThey also have overtones of mythological and religious narratives. “There is a hint of the potential paradise on offer if we work with the natural world\, and equally\, with the potential loss of natural systems that nurture and support us\, if we don’t\,” the artist says. \nIndividually\, that is within each triptych\, the photos present different perspectives\, but are put together as if continuous\, so giving the viewer a slightly unreal sense of place. They are like a memory\, which recalls a place\, but is never exactly as it is in reality. Arguably the groves become more evocative\, more epic\, even than the real thing\, as so many places\, people or ideals humans hold dear seem to become\, in imagination\, larger than life. \nThe photographs were shot on film\, using a 50 year old Hasselblad medium format camera. They are sold in limited edition prints.  \nJane Burton Taylor

SUMMARY:Expanding the Web
DESCRIPTION:Prev\n			1of2\n			Next\n		\n	\n\n\nExpanding the Web \nBy Jude Skeers \nIn ‘Expanding the Web’ visual artist Jude Skeers investigates the construction\, deconstruction and reconstruction of the web form. His original innovative web was designed and constructed over 25 years ago. The simplicity of the design has allowed for webs to be installed in internal and external spaces\, utilizing available structures. In this exhibition the artistry of the web is defined by the available space and by Jude’s decision to use only black yarn. Several of the webs are knitted with black sequins embellishing the black yarn. \n‘Expanding the Web’ will have a number of structures pre-assembled and installed in the gallery space. During the three weeks of the exhibition more webs will be created and added\, building on the design concept. Members of the public will be able to make their own personal web. Giving away the design celebrates the creative expansion of the web. Teaching people to make a web allows them to teach it to more people and makes the web a living\, growing thing. Going further and further\, the creative idea that once started continues on. \nJude himself says\, “Natural webs are all around the environment and yet I have dared to create an artificial one\, it looks like a web\, though it’s not exactly something a spider would make\, but it’s hanging from a tree just as a night spider might have made it. I love the way they change\, with the shadows in the morning and afternoon light. There’s that feeling of naturalness about them and yet a sense of artificiality is there as well.” \nThe beauty and simplicity of the web design is that it is first constructed as a small piece of knitted fabric. It is then deconstructed by dropping and removing most of the stitches. What remains is a loosely bound continuous length of yarn or string\, which is installed to reveal a perfectly formed symmetrical web. The web design can also be modified to form a spiral. Webs have been installed in parks and gardens throughout Australia\, including Townsville\, Mittagong\, Launceston and Bunbury\, The largest\, 5 metres in diameter\, was installed along the Ross River\, Townsville\, in 2001. The flexible design has allowed for webs as small as 25cm in diameter to be created. These tiny webs are attached to acrylic sheeting\, allowing them to be hung in different locations. \nA collaboration with Bamboo artist Peter Wojciechowski has produced three dimensional structures which have become an integral part of Jude’s installations. In this exhibition he used painted black dowel to form the simple triangle shape structures and placed a web inside. This then becomes the template for the construction of a triangular or hexagonal pyramid. \nExpanding the Web will be at Barometer Gallery\, 13 Gurner Street Paddington NSW from August 3rd to 18th. DESCRIPTION:Prev\n			1of2\n			Next\n		\n	\n\n\nAn exhibition of photographs by Kurt Sorensen and Koji Makino that draws inspiration from the Illawarra region. Makino documents the community of Japanese-Australian surfers living in the Illawarra using portrait and landscape photography while Sorensen uses diary entries from a survivor of the 18th century shipwreck ‘Sydney Cove’ as inspiration for his wet plate collodion land and seascapes.

DESCRIPTION:Prev\n			1of2\n			Next\n		\n	\n\n\nBarbara Rogers works with the Shibori technique itajime. Shibori is a Japanese term for a variety of methods for dyeing cloth by binding\, stitching\, folding\, twisting or compressing. There are many ways one can bind\, stitch\, fold\, twist or compress cloth for Shibori\, and each way results in very different patterns. Each method is used to achieve a certain result\, and each method is used to work in harmony with the type of cloth. The technique used in Shibori depends not only on the desired pattern\, but also the cloth being dyed. Different techniques can be used with one another to achieve more elaborate results.

SUMMARY:RESISTING THE BLUES
DESCRIPTION:Jane Callender studied textiles at the University of the Creative Arts\, Farnham gaining a BA (hons) degree in 1977.  It was here that she was introduced to both indigo dyeing and shibori and she has been fascinated by this combination ever since. Her work reveals a passion for pattern manifest through shibori techniques\, and as a stitch specialist her focus has been on motif construction and pattern rhythms. The method requires pulling up and tying off hand stitched threads and selected works can be dipped in the indigo vat as many as 20 times. She draws on tradition\, the natural world and geometry; she may choose a fabric for its distinct surface appeal while other textile techniques and dyes are frequently introduced to plainer cloth. Collectively these result in her innovative and unique shibori textiles which have been widely exhibited internationally. \n2000 Pattern Combinations\, A step by step guide to creating pattern by Jane Callender is published by Anova\, Batsford\, and co-published in Japan by Bunka Shuppan in Japanese translation.

SUMMARY:ESSENCE OF PLACE
DESCRIPTION:Essence of Place – An exhibition of tapestries by Shunyam Smith \nTapestry as a medium has traditionally been used both to tell stories\, personal and historical\, full of allusion and metaphor. It requires a deeper reading to uncover the hidden layers of meanings and memories that are entwined with the physical materials and slow nature of the weaving. \nStories of places and objects are created by time as well as their physicality\, and to begin to understand the essence of a place one must absorb these slowly\, over time. Some of these tapestries tell more obvious stories\, but always shaped by the intangible boundaries between land\, humankind\, and the influences of place. For decades now\, watching the changing process of the land where I live has allowed me to ‘read’ and absorb these stories and memories stored in trees\, rocks\, lakes\, rivers\, forests and mountains. Our human memories are traced in objects all around us. Nature has written her history everywhere if we choose to look slowly and deeply. \nAt the heart of my work is this interrelation of stories and the material\, their mutual intrication a metaphor for the weaving process\, revealing the richness and complexity of the essence of place.

Raja pink and marigold turban shades sit atop antique tea urns and weathered Indian army water flasks\, as soothing hues of mud printed canvas wrap tightly around wooden stools and fluffy cushions. All fabrics are hand block printed and riddled with marvellous imperfections that tell tales of many Indian Summers past!

DESCRIPTION:Working with natural dyes and fabrics Julie Ryder explores the boundaries and tensions between nature and culture\, and the space between. \nCanberra-based textile artist Julie Ryder combines the arts practice of printmaking with the impact of chemical reaction and transformation. Ryder’s early science training and study working in a veterinary research lab\, have translated into her science-based arts practice; her early scientific research and investigation led her to an ongoing fascination with the micro and the macro in nature. She uses bacteria\, moulds\, the chemical reaction that occurs between vegetable matter\, natural fibres and various minerals used for mordants to create her naturally-dyed textiles and embroideries.
