DESCRIPTION:An exploration of non-colour by seven recent graduates of Sydney’s National Art School: Kirsten Drewes\, Jan Handel\, Emma Kirby\, Michelle Le Dain\, Melinda Marshman\, Elizabeth Rankin and Helen Redmond. \nWhite is the achromatic\, the colour without a hue. It is the light produced by the streaming of the spectrum of colours – the nothing produced by the all. \nThe multiplicity of white from absolute to innuendo is the subject that draws together seven recent alumni of the National Art School. Informed by each artists’ different background experiences\, the processes and interpretations of this contradictory colour are expectedly diverse: from Drewes’ felted body sculpture\, Le Dain’s playful cotton balls and Handel’s wax and paper mourning vials to Marshman’s poetic Alpine snowscapes\, Kirby’s material alchemy\, Redmond’s architectural distillations of light and a Hitchcock-twist on the virginal wedding dress by Elizabeth Rankin. DESCRIPTION:Photography by Genevieve Swifte \nAn associated exhibition of the Head On Photo Festival 2015 \n‘Trespass’ operates as series of echoes thrown beyond some limit; a horizon line\, a window’s edge\, the surface of a still body of water. Playful\, liminal\, the imagery explores that sliver of photographic space that bleeds outwards\, establishing a poetics of mirroring between the object photographed and an iconography borrowed from a far older lexicon. Here\, landscape is paired with abstracted approaches towards self-portraiture and baroque imagery of angelic forms is evoked via archives of ornithological specimens. Native swans\, parrots\, owls and a vulture’s wing are carefully lit\, framed and fused with representations of the body and the earth. SUMMARY:Yangon Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Françoise Holtzmacher shows us a sense of sadness\, absurdity\, and abandon that pervades the Yangon Zoological Gardens in Myanmar. Listless captive animals are juxtaposed against joyous and grotesque animal statues\, once again raising the question about the relevance of zoos. \nThe Yangon Zoological Gardens and Parks offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The oldest zoo in Myanmar\, established in 1901 in honour of Queen Victoria\, boasts rare and endangered animal species as well as rich flora over several sprawling acres. Many animals were moved to the zoo in the new capital Naypyidaw in 2008\, leaving behind numerous empty cages. Grotesque and joyous animal statues scattered throughout the park are juxtaposed against the still\, almost listless animals kept in often narrow cages. A heavy sense of sadness\, absurdity\, and abandon pervades the park. Today one can’t help but question the relevance of zoos\, not only in Myanmar but everywhere else. SUMMARY:"In Changing Light" - digital photographs from Eastern and Central Australia
DESCRIPTION:Limited edition digital inkjet prints of landforms and landscapes as they reflect diurnal and seasonal change by Philip Bell. \nMy images are mainly from the Warrumbungles\, Central Australia\, and the Blue Mountains. Some are taken after fires.\nI have etched the contours of the landscape\, others find contrast in the dusk or morning shadows. \nI use quite long exposures and low light settings. I don’t mind a bit of blur\, or having to ‘push’ the image to lose the digital sheen that I associate with advertising. \nOpen  1:00 – 6:00 pm every day.

SUMMARY:Natural Wonders
DESCRIPTION:Natural Wonders\, natural dyes on paper and textiles by Julie Ryder. \nNatural Wonders is a mixed media exhibition consisting of works on paper and naturally dyed and stitched textiles derived and inspired by organic materials drawn and collected from sites that hold personal significance for the artist. Her daily journey from home to studio\, and the many bush and urban walks she takes have inspired her to look at the native and introduced flora of Canberra\, delving into its history to determine the impact that white settlement and the urbanisation of this designed city had on the traditional lands of the Ngunnawal. SUMMARY:natura naturans
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition by Rowan Conroy features photographic cloud works that were made during the New South Wales firestorms of 17 October 2013. Prime Minister Tony Abbot at the time commented that firestorms are a natural part of the Australian landscape. This was just nature going about its business\, nature naturing.  The reality of human induced climate change challenges these enlightenment notions of the sublime in nature. Now when we gaze at up at the clouds we can no longer be sure that what we are seeing is nature in its purest form free from the influence of human action. DESCRIPTION:Black and white photographs by Olive R Odewahn \nOlive Rose Odewahn (1914–2006) was a keen amateur photographer. From her teenage years Olive always carried a camera and with it she carefully photographed life around her\, from the farm she grew up on\, to her home on a property in Walla Walla (near Albury) after she married in 1938. For over sixty years\, Olive photographed (first in black and white and later in colour) landscapes\, scenes and portraits; she pictured her family and friends\, the farm and its work\, and special events and places.
