SUMMARY:The Nature Table
DESCRIPTION:‘The Nature Table’ by Katrina Simon is an exhibition that brings together works on paper\, photography\, found objects and transformed objects that all engage with the forms and dynamics of depicting the natural world. These include elements that reference landscape and topography\, the growth and transformation of living organisms and the processes of collecting and classification. \nDr Katrina Simon is a designer and visual artist with a background in architecture\, landscape architecture and fine art. She has exhibited work relating to landscape and mapping in numerous solo and group show\, including Objectspace in Auckland\, NZ\, and the Prague Quadrennial for Performance Design and Space in Prague\, Czech Republic in 2015. Katrina has also held residencies at the Cité des Arts International in Paris and the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art\, Nature and Dance in New York.  Her design and research interests focus on the expression of memory and its loss in landscapes\, explored through a range of practices that include exhibitions\, design research\,  design competitions\, archival research\, experimental writing\, and performance-based research. SUMMARY:Mnemonic Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Mnemonic Textiles Emma Peters \nMnemonic textiles are those we associate with our recollections of significant personal experiences. Such textiles become tangible representations of self\, which we are compelled to keep\, cherish and pass down to future generations. They have emotional durability – a theory proposed by Jonathan Chapman and employed to frame this body of work. Our potent connection with mnemonic textiles offers an approach to sustainable design in the face of disposable products so pervasive in contemporary western society. \nEmma Peters references the tradition of patch-worked heirloom quilts and wagga’s to present a collection of experimental textiles that examines memory as a driving conceptual force. The Mnemonic Textiles exhibition presents work that captures memory and sustains life-long attachment. \nThe Topography of Memory series combines natural dye\, digital print\, stitching and felting techniques to suggest disconcertingly distorted childhood memories that remain fundamental influences upon identity. These pieces are shown alongside The Memento Project\, realized as a series of small hand-stitched textile fragments. DESCRIPTION:An exploration of non-colour by seven recent graduates of Sydney’s National Art School: Kirsten Drewes\, Jan Handel\, Emma Kirby\, Michelle Le Dain\, Melinda Marshman\, Elizabeth Rankin and Helen Redmond. \nWhite is the achromatic\, the colour without a hue. It is the light produced by the streaming of the spectrum of colours – the nothing produced by the all. \nThe multiplicity of white from absolute to innuendo is the subject that draws together seven recent alumni of the National Art School. Informed by each artists’ different background experiences\, the processes and interpretations of this contradictory colour are expectedly diverse: from Drewes’ felted body sculpture\, Le Dain’s playful cotton balls and Handel’s wax and paper mourning vials to Marshman’s poetic Alpine snowscapes\, Kirby’s material alchemy\, Redmond’s architectural distillations of light and a Hitchcock-twist on the virginal wedding dress by Elizabeth Rankin. There is an infinite number of ways one can bind\, stitch\, fold or compress cloth for shibori\, resulting in very different patterns. Each method achieves a specific result\, and is used to work in harmony with the type of cloth. \nIn geometry\, a diagonal is a line segment joining two non-consecutive vertices of a polygon or polyhedron. DESCRIPTION:Here and There is a group exhibition by three professional textile artists – Julie Ryder\, Sharon Peoples and Barbara Rogers – that responds to the concept of time and place – of being in one geographical location whilst making work about a distant other. SUMMARY:Trespass
DESCRIPTION:Photography by Genevieve Swifte \nAn associated exhibition of the Head On Photo Festival 2015 \n‘Trespass’ operates as series of echoes thrown beyond some limit; a horizon line\, a window’s edge\, the surface of a still body of water. Playful\, liminal\, the imagery explores that sliver of photographic space that bleeds outwards\, establishing a poetics of mirroring between the object photographed and an iconography borrowed from a far older lexicon. Here\, landscape is paired with abstracted approaches towards self-portraiture and baroque imagery of angelic forms is evoked via archives of ornithological specimens. Native swans\, parrots\, owls and a vulture’s wing are carefully lit\, framed and fused with representations of the body and the earth. SUMMARY:Yangon Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Françoise Holtzmacher shows us a sense of sadness\, absurdity\, and abandon that pervades the Yangon Zoological Gardens in Myanmar. Listless captive animals are juxtaposed against joyous and grotesque animal statues\, once again raising the question about the relevance of zoos. \nThe Yangon Zoological Gardens and Parks offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The oldest zoo in Myanmar\, established in 1901 in honour of Queen Victoria\, boasts rare and endangered animal species as well as rich flora over several sprawling acres. Many animals were moved to the zoo in the new capital Naypyidaw in 2008\, leaving behind numerous empty cages. Grotesque and joyous animal statues scattered throughout the park are juxtaposed against the still\, almost listless animals kept in often narrow cages. A heavy sense of sadness\, absurdity\, and abandon pervades the park. Today one can’t help but question the relevance of zoos\, not only in Myanmar but everywhere else.
