DESCRIPTION:MCDONALD DUCK PROJECT\n1989 REVISITED\nEWEN MCDONALD \n5 AUGUST TO 30 AUGUST 2026 \nYou could say that my installation MCDONALD DUCK PROJECT is about labour-intensive production. The two components are both the result of intensive hands-on work – a line of mismatched plastic eggs made for broody hens purchased from a sheltered workshop; and stuffed ducklings found on a road trip through France at a petrol station where one would least expect to see a display of fluffy Chinese souvenirs. Equally\, the installation itself takes time … but in a gallery space\, more a quiet contemplative experience than the exacting and systematic fabrication processes one associates with mass production . \nAs an installation artist exploring possibilities that could be determined ‘sculptural practice’\, I have been interested more by the dynamics of arrangement and display\, and the interplay of light and shadows in any particular room. I used to refer to myself as a ‘space engineer’ which always elicited quizzical responses about associations with NASA. \nAs a fan of Marcel Duchamp’s incorporation of the ready-made into art\, I too am interested in readily available mass-produced objects. DESCRIPTION:  \nRising Tide\, 2025 \nVenice\, the famously sinking city (by nearly 13 centimetres between 1950 and 1970) is but part of a vast wetland that is the largest in the Mediterranean. Here is a watery garden of mud and barene lowlands that\, until recently\, were threatened by the Adriatic tides which\, thanks to manmade impacts on the lagoon environment and rising sea levels\, were coming quicker\, faster and higher. The deployment of the €5 billion MOSE flood barriers since October 2020 has put that existential threat on hold. However\, the garden of Venice is still recovering from millions of tonnes of toxic waste pumped in from neighbouring mainland petrochemical plants until the 1990s\, destructive dredging and the use of the wetlands as a dumping ground for some 2000 abandoned boats\, leaking chemicals\, fuel and microplastics into the lagoon. Since becoming operational\, MOSE has been raised more than 49 times. According to the New York Times\, its incessant deployment could render the wetlands a fetid swamp choked by noxious algae\, turning the city’s canals into stinking open sewers. When Lord Byron mused that Venice ‘sinks\, like a seaweed\, into whence she rose’\, he could never have imagined the rising tide we must now contemplate. \nOver the Venetian winter of 2023–24\, Rising Tide observed this littoral zone\, a time of acqua alta\, with the dredging of the canal city’s famous black silt from green barges with hydraulic arms\, and the constant reclaiming of land from the sea. Rising Tide\, created in the Wave furnace on the glassmaking island of Murano\, captures this lagoon environment in flux. DESCRIPTION:  \nLace as Sound is an installation of experimental textiles created through a novel collaboration between textile designer Cecilia Heffer and composer Mara Schwerdtfeger. Heffer was awarded a Powerhouse Research scholarship to explore the structure of lace as sound. A suite of vocal harmonies has become a method for expressing the often-invisible female labour behind the textile industry. Music scores have been explored using a state-of-the-art Shima Seiki Seamless knit machine at the University of Technology\, Sydney. Here\, drawing is a translative medium between worlds\, and flame is an interlocutor: something that speaks to those who know how to listen. \nTia Madden’s practice is concerned with the porous boundaries between drawing and writing\, the politics of interpretation\, the poetics of illegibility\, and the potential for abstract marks to behave communicatively when framed – or misread – as language. DESCRIPTION:  \nINTERMEZZO\nEDUARDO SANTOS \nIntermezzo: a musical term denoting a transitional passage. This idea of the intermezzo resonates with my current process\, as I find myself returning to old ways of painting. A transition between past and future\, between urban and rural life\, as the work assumes shifts in dimension and palette. The tension between introspection\, nostalgia and the perpetual surge of the elements\, the volume of the sky\, and the mutability of the sea. \nFlux\, firmament and textural illusion forge the depth of each work. Metamorphosis is both a metaphor and the physical expression of my own desire for change. They are propelled by contradiction\, restless and at peace. SUMMARY:META MORPHEUS
DESCRIPTION:  \nJo Allsop\, Hobart Hughes and Penny Simons. \nOctober 25th –  November 1st\nOpen daily 10 – 4pm\nOpening Saturday 26th October 4 – 6pm \n‘Meta Morpheus’ alludes to and plays with the term metamorphosis\, the intention being a chimeric transformation of its original meaning. Meta here is used to describe a subject that transcends its original limits. Morpheus who as the Greek god of dreams and sleep\, bears messages from the underworld to be interpreted subliminally by the cognisant self. \nIn this intriguing show\, the artists offer a sense of the subconscious and the sublime. SUMMARY:Myth & Signification
DESCRIPTION:  \nKudos Offsite presents Myth & Signification\, an exhibition that invites four artists to reflect upon modern mythmaking and the ability of myth to distort and shape meaning. Through sculpture\, installation\, painting and textiles\, myth and counter-myth are explored as devices for investigating the potentiality of oppositional perspectives and utopian ideas in resisting the creation of a world without contradiction. \nDonna Haraway wrote\, “it matters what stories make worlds\, what worlds make stories.” In order to make these worlds\, to suspend reality\, Roland Barthes wrote about Myth and its ability to abolish the complexity of human acts with the intention of creating a world without contradiction. Myth accomplishes this as a kind of metalanguage\, using signs as signifiers to distort meaning and generate new narratives. In The Robbery of Language Roland Boer claims that the crafting of “a world without contradiction” is an undeniable acknowledgement of erasing other perspectives in favour of a singular vision. \nMyth and Signification invites four artists to reflect upon myth and counter-myth as building blocks for such worlds and to consider the relationship between oppositional perspectives and the discourses that dominate them through the utilisation of myth’s power to distort meaning.
