Lace as Sound is an installation of experimental textiles created through a novel collaboration between textile designer Cecilia Heffer and composer Mara Schwerdtfeger. Heffer was awarded a Powerhouse Research scholarship to explore the structure of lace as sound. A suite of vocal harmonies has become a method for expressing the often-invisible female labour behind the textile industry. Music scores have been explored using a state-of-the-art Shima Seiki Seamless knit machine at the University of Technology, Sydney. Poetically, when the Shima knits the scores, it ‘sings the lace,’ giving contemporary form to lost lace-making histories.
