Karrikins: A solo photographic exhibition by Rob Walwyn

November 24, 2021 - November 28, 2021

Barometer Gallery  / www.barometer.net.au   /  www.robwalwyn.com
Wednesday 24 November – Sunday 28 November 2021

A solo photographic exhibition in November 2021 documenting the aftermath of the recent 2019-20 Australian bushfires using the discontinued and extremely rare Kodak Aerochrome false-colour infrared film.

The name Karrikins refers to a set of chemicals that are produced as a result of wildfires and can stimulate the regrowth of certain plants. For this series I have used both medium format and 35mm Kodak Aerochrome film, a false-colour infrared film developed by Kodak in tandem with the US Military during World War 2, which was originally designed to detect enemy camouflage. Aerochrome captures the infrared light reflecting off the regrowth in lurid shades of pink and red, which contrasts against the burnt and blackened trees, evoking images of the flickering flames that crept up these trees only months earlier.

This exhibition is part of HeadOn Photo Festival (which runs from the 21st to 28th of November), with one of my images from this series being selected as a semi-finalist in the Landscape category of HeadOn 2021 Photo Awards.

Karrikins will run from Wednesday 24th of November 2021 to Sunday 28th November.

The majority of the exhibition can easily be viewed through the two large gallery windows each day and evening.
